How to Choose Garage Door Colors

You want to spruce up your house with new paint or siding. The trim and front door need a new coat of paint, too, so you choose a different, more modern color. Since the garage door constitutes approximately 30 percent of the front of your home, it significantly contributes to the curb appeal of your home. Whether buying a new door or painting the one you have, choose the color carefully so that your neighbors will say “Wow!” instead of “Oh, no!”

Instructions

Walk around your neighborhood and take a good look at the homes and garage doors. Assess the color scheme of the homes and the character of the neighborhood. If the houses are all white, tan, yellow or light blue with matching garage doors, for example, the burgundy house and pink garage door you have planned would look out of place. Look at other houses and garage doors to see what you like and do not like.

Paint your door the same color as your house to give your home a uniform look and to make it appear larger. Should you insist on a different color, make it complement the house and use a close shade. For your brown house, for example, choose a cocoa color that is just a bit lighter than the house.

Resist the urge to paint the garage door the same color as the trim and front door. Navy blue shutters and a navy front door might look great with your yellow house, but don’t transfer that to the garage door. The accent color on the garage could make your house look disjointed and could call too much attention to your home.
