Repairing a Cracked Plastic Toilet Tank

A cracked toilet tank almost always needs replacing rather than repairing. However, if the tank is made from a synthetic plastic material, you can sometimes fix the crack with the right adhesive. The adhesive is more functional on plastic than on porcelain tanks because porcelain requires an adhesive that isn't as flexible or waterproof. Try to patch your toilet tank before opting to replace it. If the adhesive holds, you can have a tank that lasts for years.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water to the toilet. The faucet is usually located near the toilet base or under the sink.

    • 2

Flush the toilet to remove the water from the tank.

    • 3

Remove the tank lid and ensure all the water is gone.

    • 4

Wipe inside the tank with a towel to dry it. Use a hairdryer on the crack or wait for the surface to dry thoroughly.

    • 5

Apply a line of plumber's adhesive and sealant to the crack. Push the adhesive's nozzle into the crack so the adhesive works inside completely.

    • 6

Allow the adhesive to dry thoroughly before using the tank. This varies based on the brand of adhesive you purchased. If in doubt, wait at least 24 hours before turning the water to the toilet back on.
