How to Adjust the Anti-Scald Shelf on a Shower Faucet

Many faucets feature an anti-scald dial inside the faucet handle to reduce the chance of scalding. This device actually blocks the handle of the faucet from rotating all the way toward the hot side, or the counterclockwise direction on most faucets. When the handle turns toward hot, it allows only hot water into the spout while shutting off the cold water completely. Limiting the rotation of the handle decreases the total maximum temperature and prevents scalding. This is adjustable to suit your faucet and water heater.

Find the screw on the side of the faucet handle. This screw holds the handle on the faucet and is usually underneath the faucet handle lever or along the base of the handle. Unscrew this screw by turning counterclockwise and remove with an Allen wrench.

Pull the handle off by gently sliding it backward off the faucet with your hands until it comes off the cartridge stem, the small rod under the handle.

    • 3

Locate the scald guard, a dial-shaped plastic part on the end of the faucet right below the handle. This part may have a notched dial or a plastic knob, depending on what type of faucet you own.

    • 4

Turn the guard to the right or left to limit the rotation of the faucet handle. Position the handle on the guard to see which direction to turn the dial. You can also follow the indicators on the dial itself, if your faucet scald guard has these indicators.

Replace the handle on the end of the faucet by pushing it onto the stem. Insert and tighten the handle screw. Test the faucet water and reposition the guard as needed until your water is the desired temperature.
