Look for signs of mold growing on various surfaces that have been water-damaged. Mold also may grow on or under surfaces, behind walls and even in plaster. Walls and surfaces will turn an earthy color and become discolored by mold.
Use your sense of smell to determine whether you have airborne mold. Areas where mold is growing will smell musty, as if something has been rained-on and never fully dried.
Take note of any symptoms of airborne mold. Members of your household with sensitivity to mold allergies, or who are allergic to other organic materials like pollens or grass, may exhibit symptoms when airborne mold is present. Symptoms include respiratory problems, headaches, nose and throat irritation, burning eyes, sinus congestion and shortness of breath.
Test the area with an airborne mold sampling kit. There are many different sampling kits available on the market. Follow the instructions carefully to ensure you get an accurate reading.
Use the kit to sample the air outside your home before you test the inside. This will let you know whether the level inside your home is above normal.
