How to Attach a Chuck Key

Many power tools, especially drills, need a particular type of wrench referred to as a "chuck key" for securing bits and other types of attachments. Since chuck keys are relatively small, they are easy to misplace. If you misplace a key, this can be quite frustrating, especially if you need it for a project. A chuck key holder prevents you from losing the key and it connects directly to the power tool's cord. It comes with a gripping holster.

Instructions

    • 1

Detach the drill cord from an electrical outlet and lay it flat on an even work surface with the cord fully extended.

    • 2

Determine the two different ends of the chuck key holder. One end contains a rectangular flap, divided down the middle, with openings on either side. The other end has a circular opening.

    • 3

Wind the strap around the cord, about 2 or 3 inches from the tool's handle. Feed the divided end through the circular opening on the other end.

    • 4

Pull apart the divided end of the strap and insert the arms of the chuck key through the corresponding openings. Grab the split end and pull them onto the arms until they are flush against the stem of the chuck key.

    • 5

Confirm that the position of the chuck key holder on the cord is close enough for the attached chuck key to reach the power tool. If it is not, slide the holder along the cord, toward the tool, until it can reach. Pull the strap to tighten the loop around the cord.
