The first step in eradicating bed bugs is inspecting the site of the bed bug infestation. When inspecting for bed bugs, professionals look not only at the bed and bedding, but also the areas that surround the bed. They try to locate a likely source from which the bed bugs came, as well as any cracks and crevices in which the bugs could be hiding. This includes inspecting carpet fibers and floor boards for bed bugs and their progeny.
Most professional exterminators use pesticide spray to treat beds and surrounding pieces of furniture. While there are sprays available to consumers, most professionals use professional grade spray, a stronger variety than the home owner could purchase.
Along with spraying the area, exterminators may employ heat treatment, using professional heat guns or even standard hair dryers to attack bed bugs, as they can not withstand extreme heat. Professionals may use small, hand-held heat tools or even larger heat ovens into which they can place removable objects such as sheets or rugs.
Once professionals are satisfied that the bed bugs have been killed, they seal the mattress by wrapping it in a bed-bug-prevention approved mattress cover. The exterminators may also use caulk to seal up any cracks in walls or flooring through which bed bugs could invade.
