DIY Buffing Compound

Your favorite metal object around the home inevitably gets a few scratches here and there after extended use. While your metal teapot or cookware may still function, they lose some aesthetic appeal. Make your own buffing compound at home to polish out unappealing scratches with several household items. Apply the compound to the scratch area with a wet sponge and let the compound dry for one hour. Remove with hot water and buff out the scratches with a clean rag. Your metal pieces will look like new.

Instructions

    • 1

Add one part salt and one part all-purpose flour to a mixing bowl. Stir the two contents until completely mixed together. The salt acts as an abrasiveness that buffs out scratches and the flour helps thicken the mixture when all other ingredients are added.

    • 2

Add one part vinegar to the salt and flour mixture.

    • 3

Continue to mix the vinegar into the bowl until you create a thick paste. If you see any clumps of flour or salt, add slightly more vinegar to the mixture. This indicates that your measurements might be off. For maximum effectiveness, the mixture must have a smooth paste-like consistency.

    • 4

Immediately apply to the item you need to polish. The mixture dries after about an hour and must still be in liquid form to use.
