How to Refinish Porcelain Sinks

Porcelain sinks, like tubs, are cast iron with the trademark shiny coat of porcelain baked on during their manufacture. After they wear down over the years, you obviously can't refinish them in a kiln -- but you can refinish them. Porcelain sinks and tubs can be revitalized by what is essentially a painting process, but with specialized paints. See your local home improvement store for the right chemicals and equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the faucet and other removable fixtures from your sink using the screwdriver and wrench. Put masking tape over any remaining parts that aren't porcelain. Lay plastic tarps on the floor and tape them over the walls around the sink.

    • 2

Put on the respirator and gloves. Apply porcelain hydrofluoric acid etching solution to the whole porcelain part of the sink surface using a paint brush. Let it sit on the surface for about 10 minutes, until the shine is gone from the surface. Rinse well.

    • 3

Load the airless paint sprayer with porcelain primer. Spray it on in a thin, even coat, keeping the sprayer moving at all times so it doesn't gather or drip.

    • 4

Let the primer dry for four hours. Spray on a second coat in the same manner. Let it dry for 12 hours.

    • 5

Reload your paint sprayer with paint-polyurethane mix. Spray it on in the same manner as before, in a light, thin layer, keeping the sprayer moving at all times. Let it dry for 4 hours.

    • 6

Apply a second coat of the paint-polyurethane mix. Let it dry. Repeat, applying four to six coats. Let it dry for 48 hours, then reassemble the sink.
