Put on safety glasses, a dust mask, gloves, a long-sleeved shirt and long pants before working with insulation to protect yourself from irritation from the fibers.
Look at the first row of insulation to determine which way it runs, which is in the same direction as the ceiling or floor beams. Walk to the side of the area so that the second layer will be positioned perpendicular to the first row.
Place the end of the insulation batt flush with the wall all the way to the left side of the installation area and unroll it to the other end. Cut off the excess insulation, using a utility knife.
Walk back to the starting location, and place the end of the insulation roll directly beside the first piece, butting the edges as closely as possible so there are no gaps. Unroll the insulation all the way to the other end of the area as well, and cut off the excess.
Continue the process of installing side-by-side rows of insulation batts until the entire area is covered.
Locate any light fixtures, sockets or ventilation fans that are now covered by the insulation, and cut out circular holes in the insulation, using the utility knife, so that the insulation no longer covers these fixtures. The circle must be 3 inches wider than all of these fixtures.
