How to Glaze Over Polyurethane

Glazing is a technique that allows you to refinish wood surfaces, such as kitchen cabinets, to create an antique look. Glaze is a translucent product which means the underlying finish shows through. This is a technique you can use when your kitchen cabinets require an update but you do not want to completely refinish them. To do this, you need products that are available at your local home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand a cabinet door using the 200-grit sandpaper with an orbital or handheld sander to remove the polyurethane finish.

    • 2

Wipe the surface of the wood with a clean cloth to remove residue from the sanding.

    • 3

Open the can of glaze by prying on the lid with the screwdriver. Dip the rag into the glaze.

    • 4

Rub the glaze on the wood in a circular motion. Do this in a small area between 8 and 10 inches in diameter. Wipe off the excess glaze with a clean cloth.

    • 5

Set the cabinet door aside to dry for at least eight hours.

    • 6

Continue this process and apply glaze on other wood that has a polyurethane finish.
