How to Clear Water Odor

Water odors can drastically change the smell and taste of your drinking water and make it very unappealing. To ensure you have clean water in your home, you should investigate the cause of water odors and eliminate it immediately. Not only will this give you water that tastes clean, it will also prevent health issues associated with contaminated water. There are a few different methods you can use to clear odors from your water.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your cold water and determine if the smell is coming from it. If not, turn on the hot water. If you smell an odor like rotten eggs, you probably have a hydrogen sulfide problem in your water heater.

    • 2

Contact a professional plumber to replace the magnesium anode in your water heater or disinfect it with chlorine bleach. This can provide corrosion protection as well as remove hydrogen sulfide from the water.

    • 3

Increase your water heater temperature to 160 degrees for a few hours to kill sulfur bacteria. Flush the water heater to remove the dead bacteria. If you are not familiar with water heaters and their safe operation, consider contacting a professional plumber.

    • 4

Install an activated carbon filter on faucets for low hydrogen sulfide levels. Carbon filters can also remove other substances besides hydrogen sulfide.

    • 5

Contact a professional plumber to flush private well-water systems with a very strong chlorination solution. It may also be necessary to clean the well casing.

    • 6

Contact a professional plumber to install an oxidation filtration system. This will inject an oxidizing chemical directly into your water supply. Hydrogen sulfide will be changed to sulfur, which can then be removed by a manganese greensand filter.
