Identify the broken or sagging beam.
Place the temporary support or ceiling jack next to the sagging or broken beam. Jack up the structure being held by the broken beam so it can be easily removed.
Remove the mounting hardware from the broken beam and move it out of place.
Reinforce any areas of the structure being held by the broken support. Use metal brackets to brace any areas of the structure that may have cracked due to bowing when the original support failed.
Place the new support beam and anchor it into place with hardware, including wood screws.
Release the ceiling jack slowly, allowing the full weight of the structure to rest on the new beam. If there's any shift or cracking with the new beam, stop immediately. Reinforce the beam and release the temporary jack support.
