How to Install Duct Wrap

Ducts are the large sheet metal tubes that carry hot and cold air from a heater and air conditioner to rooms. They are thin and flimsy, so the air is never as hot or cold when it reaches its destination as it was at first. Duct wrap is an insulating blanket that maintains the air temperature within the duct. It is usually at least 1 1/2 inches thick, but it can be twice that and it comes in rolls up to 100 feet long and 6 feet wide. Installing duct wrap is simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean and dry the duct you intend to wrap with a clean towel. Seal leaks in the duct with duct tape, foil tape or mastic tape.

    • 2

Measure the exterior dimensions of the duct with a measuring tape. Cut the roll of duct wrap into pieces 2 inches longer than the circumference of the duct with a utility knife. You'll install the wrap in sections.

    • 3

Remove only the insulation but leave the facing from the excess 2 inches of the duct wrap section. Cut the insulation from the wrap with a utility knife. Join the wrap to itself so that the insulation fits tightly together and 2 inches of the duct wrap facing overlaps the intact duct wrap section.

    • 4

Staple the overlapping facing to the intact duct wrap, using an outward clinch stapler. Seal the joint with duct tape.

    • 5

Overlap sections of duct wrap where they butt together the same way you join each section of wrap to itself when you wrap the duct. Cut 2 inches of insulation from one end of each duct wrap section so that the duct wrap facing will overlap the preceding section.

    • 6

Staple all overlaps with an outward clinch stapler to physically connect the sections of duct wrap, then seal all joints between the sections of duct wrap with duct tape.
