What to Do About a Rusty Bathtub?

Rust occurs when oxygen, water and metals mix to create iron oxides. Bathtubs, sinks and toilet bowls are areas inside the home that can stain with rust. Leaky faucets and high metal content in the water can cause bathtubs to become unsightly with rust stains. Homeowners have options available to remove or hide the rust stains growing in the bathtub.
  1. Cleaning Rust Stains

    • Homeowners can clean mild rust stains in a bathtub with an acidic or all-purpose bathroom cleaner. Rust stains in the bathtub may be the result of high iron, brass or copper content in the water. Plumbing fittings that are copper or brass may leave stains in the bathtub as well. Natural cleaners, such as white vinegar and lemon juice, are weak acidic cleansers that may remove mild rust staining from the bathtub. Cleaning products with phosphoric acid can remove difficult stains in the bathroom.

    Refinishing

    • When a bathtub has heavy rust stains, the homeowner can refinish the enamel surface of the tub. Refinishing kits contain paint that will cover the rust stains and restore the bathtub to a new finish. The bathtub must be scrubbed clean and completely dry before applying the paint to the tub. The kits are available in white and standard colors, or homeowners can purchase a custom color to match the tub.

    Inserts

    • Bathtub liners or inserts fit over the existing tub to cover rust and damage. The inserts do not remove rust stains but do create the appearance of a brand new bathtub in the bathroom. Bathtub liners or inserts can be less expensive than hiring a professional to re-enamel the tub.

    Preventing Rust Stains

    • Preventative maintenance can help to prevent rust stains from occurring in the tub. Stop all drips in the tub to prevent the water from damaging a bathtub. A water softener can prevent rust caused by a buildup of hard water. Replacing the rusty plumbing with new materials can also keep the rust from staining the inside of the bathtub.
