Fixing Cracks in Acrylic

Acrylic is used to make many common household items, including bathtubs and shower stalls. Occasionally acrylic products crack, often due to age or lack of support. A minor crack in acrylic can be easily repaired using a plastic epoxy repair kit, which can be purchased from most home improvement and hardware stores at a fraction of the price it would cost to have a repairman complete the repairs in your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic epoxy filler and hardener kit
  • Fine-grain sandpaper
  • Acrylic paint (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the acrylic to be repaired. Any repairs done on a dirty surface may not adhere or seal correctly. Allow the area to dry fully before beginning any repairs.

    • 2

Prepare the filler and hardener according to the package directions. Directions may vary slightly by brand, so follow the directions on the kit package carefully. Color the filler and hardener with acrylic paint if desired. The repaired acrylic cannot be painted once the filler and hardener dry.

    • 3

Apply the filler to the crack in the acrylic. Allow the filler to set. Use the sandpaper to gently sand down any rough edges. Carefully clean off any debris from the sandpaper with a dry cloth.

Apply the hardener on top of the filled crack. Allow the hardener to set and dry fully before using the repaired acrylic piece.
