How to Cure Silicone Coating

Silicone coatings are used in many applications throughout a home. These coatings are most commonly used in the form of caulking, to seal surfaces. Silicone can be used on nail holes, flooring and window gaps, and to protect sinks, bathtubs and tiles from water damage. In order for these seals to work, the silicone coating must be cured. This is not dependent upon air drying, but rather from moisture in the air. There are a few things you can do to facilitate the curing of silicone.

Instructions

    • 1

Isolate the room where the silicone coating is used. Close the door and try not to use the room. Plan to block this area off for two days, if possible.

    • 2

Hang sheets around the caulked area if you are unable to block the room off entirely. This may be necessary in rooms without doors, or in very large rooms.

    • 3

Place a humidifier in the room with the silicone coatings. Turn the humidifier on the highest possible setting to provide the most moisture. Leave the humidifier running as much as possible.

    • 4

Test the hardness of the caulk with your fingernail. Choose an inconspicuous spot in the coating to check. Once the silicone caulk coating is hardened, you will not be able to press your nail into it. This means that the coating is completely cured.
