How to Splice a Phone Line

To splice a phone line effectively, you need to protect the wires from air. Phone wires exposed to air oxidize -- meaning the air exposure causes them to corrode. This results in static and loss of sound quality in the phone line. If you have to repair a damaged phone line cord or lengthen a cord with a splice, the technique for making the splice takes only a few minutes. With basic hand tools and the right connector from an electronics store, you can create a phone line splice that preserves the quality of your phone line.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the phone line where you want to make a splice. If you're splicing a damaged line, cut 1/4 inch off each end of the line to remove any oxidation.

    • 2

Insert the phone line into the wire splice connector. Don't strip the insulation off the wires; simply push the line into the opening in the connector as far as it will go.

    • 3

Push the new phone line or the other half of the cut phone line into the other hole in the connector.

    • 4

Use a hand crimping tool or slip-joint pliers to press down the button top of the connector to complete the splice. Exert slow gentle pressure to push the button in so that it's level across the top of the connector. Avoid using too much pressure to keep from cracking the connector.
