How to Patch a White Leatherette

Leatherette is a vinyl product designed to look like leather. The product is primarily plastic. This makes it easy to clean, and easy to repair. However, do not use leatherette repair techniques on leather. The vinyl repair chemicals ruin genuine leather. Drip a few drops of water on the material to find out if it is leather or leatherette. Real leather absorbs the water, which will dry over time. Water drops bead on leatherette, since it is mainly plastic.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the iron and preheat it to the specified temperature for your vinyl repair kit.

    • 2

Trim any loose backing threads from the hole in the leatherette. Replace any stuffing.

    • 3

Pour rubbing alcohol on a rag and wipe the area to remove any oils. Allow the area to dry.

    • 4

Mix the liquid vinyl compounds. Because you are working with white leatherette, do not add any color to the mix.

    • 5

Apply the white, mixed compound into the tear. Spread the compound 1/4-inch onto the strong leatherette on all sides of the tear.

    • 6

Place the grain sheet that matches the rest of the piece. This sheet should be included in the repair kit. Place the textured side face down over the tear. You will see the side that says "This side up."

    • 7

Iron the piece for three to five minutes. Refer to the instructions for your kit for precise times.

    • 8

Remove the sheet and allow the patch to cool for one minute.
