How to Make Fiberglass Putty

If you have chips on your bathtub, sink or fiberglass counter and want to avoid replacing the entire unit, you may be able to repair it with fiberglass putty. Fiberglass putty consists of two compounds, the putty and a hardening agent. When mixed together, this forms a hardening putty, which can be applied to the cracked or chipped material to correct the damage. Fiberglass putty is available in various colors and hardness to match the material that you wish to repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the instructions on your packages of fiberglass putty and hardener. The mixing instructions for every product will be slightly different. Some products will require you to break up the hardener, which may come in a tube, by squeezing the tube with your hands. If necessary, mix the hardener as directed.

    • 2

Put on plastic gloves to prevent any contact between the putty and your skin. Place newspapers on the floor to protect your work area. Use a piece of cardboard to mix the putty and hardener on.

    • 3

Use a stick or paint stirrer to pull out a dollop of putty slightly larger than the amount you want to use and place it on the cardboard.

    • 4

Spoon the hardener out of the container or squirt it out of the tube in the amount recommended on the package.

    • 5

Mix the hardener and putty together on the cardboard, using the paint stirrer, until you can see that the two materials are blended.
