How to Clear Clogged Footing Drains

A footing drain is essential to keeping a house protected from water that may accumulate due to rain. Its main purpose is to redirect water away from the house's foundation. Dirt and debris may accumulate, causing the drain to get clogged. Protect the foundation by clearing the footing drain's clean-out access point. Located on the outside of the house, the clean-out, as its name suggests, must be cleaned in order for the drain to function.

Locate the house's clean-out access point. The point is located outside of the house, is typically four inches in diameter and has a steel or plastic cap fitted over it. Inspect the front and back of the house to find the clean-out. Remove any dirt or debris from the clean-out point's opening.

Remove the cap covering the clean-out access point. Insert a plumbing snake into the drain. Continue to push the snake down the drain to bind it to any obstructions. Pull the snake out. If the obstruction comes out of the drain, remove it by using your hand.

Insert a garden hose into the clean-out until its opening is clearly inside the drain. For enhanced effectiveness, use a spray nozzle on the end of the hose.Turn on the water and force a steady stream down the drain. Remove the garden hose once the water begins to flow out of the clean-out. Replace the cap covering the clean-out point.
