How to Cut Curves Into Porcelain Tile

Porcelain or ceramic tile is durable and water resistant, making it a desirable floor and wall surface covering for bathrooms, fireplace hearths and other areas of the house that require frequent cleaning or exposure to moisture. Regardless of whether you need to cut straight lines or curves, you need to have a gentle firm hand with the cut, using a special wet tile saw to avoid cracking the tile as you cut. Buying a wet tile saw can be a large investment; if you are just a hobbyist, consider renting a saw from a hardware store.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the angle and shape of the curve onto the porcelain tile using a grease pencil.

    • 2

Put on proper protective equipment such as work gloves, ear plugs and goggles.

    • 3

Open the saw's reservoir chamber and fill with water to the fill line. Replace the chamber cover and turn on saw and water supply.

    • 4

Feed the tile against the blade, following the grease pencil cut mark. Water should flow freely over the blade as you cut. Feed the tile against the blade slowly and firmly.

    • 5

Wipe away any residual grease pencil marks from the cut tile using a dry rag after you have made your desired cuts.
