How to Repair Scratches on Furniture With a Lacquer Finish With Shoe Polish

Scratches on furniture with a lacquer finish leave the wood with long, dull marks that mar the once shiny surface. A lacquer finish gives the furniture an intense shine. The scratches not only dig into the wood but also remove the lacquer radiance. Shoe polish provides a putty-like substance to fill the scratch and restore at least a portion of the shine, masking the blemish and making it less noticeable.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray a clean cloth with a dust-grabbing spray. Wipe the cloth over the lacquer-finished furniture, removing dust from the scratches.

    • 2

Place 1/2 tsp. matching shoe polish onto a rag. Starting at the end of the scratch, push the shoe polish into the entire length of the blemish. Repeat the process on the remaining scratches.

    • 3

Moisten a paper towel with water, making it damp but not wet. Wipe the excess shoe polish from the furniture with the paper towel. Fold the towel to reveal a clean area as you wipe over the top of each scratch. Avoid dipping the paper towel into the scratch and removing the shoe polish; keep it flush with the table.
