How to Deal With Scratches on Prefinished Floors

Pre-finished hardwood flooring refers to hardwood floor planks that you don't need to trim, sand, finish or seal as craftsmen have already done that; they're ready to install in your home, you just need to pick out the shade and style you like the best. However, if you find a scratch in your pre-finished hardwood floor, it presents more of a repair challenge in comparison to an unfinished floor. However, there's no reason why you can't easily and instantly fix the scratch, masking it so it's invisible.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the scratched area with an all-purpose cleaner and wipe it off with a soft cloth. If the scratch is shallow, buff 0000 steel wool over the surface. If the scratch is deep, buff it with 100-grit sandpaper.

Moisten a cloth with mineral spirits and wipe down the scratched area. This will wipe off the dust from sanding.

    • 3

Scoop out a wad of wood filler with your putty knife and press it into the scratches. Wipe off the excess with the edge of the putty knife. Allow it to set for two hours and then sand off the excess with 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe away the dust again with your cloth soaked in mineral spirits.
