How to Apply Drylok to Concrete Basement Walls

Drylok is the brand name of a concrete sealant used widely by homeowners and contractors. Although concrete appears to be impenetrable, it is actually porous. As a result, homeowners often have problems with mold or basement flooding when water seeps in. One way to alleviate this problem is to apply Drylok sealant to the concrete. Concrete sealant expands as it dries, preventing moisture from penetrating the concrete.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrub the concrete thoroughly with detergent and water. Rinse with clear water and allow it to thoroughly dry. Drying may take 24 to 48 hours. You might resort to placing fans or heaters or both in the basement to aid the process, depending on your circumstances.

    • 2

Stir the Drylok well with a paint stick. Drylok has a thicker consistency than standard paint.

    • 3

Paint the concrete with the Drylok using a 4-inch polyester paintbrush. Dip the paintbrush about halfway into the Drylok. Brush a smooth, even coat across the surface and wiggle the bristles into all crevices to push the sealant into the concrete. Work in small areas to ensure that the concrete is completely coated. The goal is to leave no gaps for water to come through.

Allow the Drylok to dry for 24 hours, then apply a second coat with a brush or paint roller for extra protection against water seepage.
