How to Recaulk a Shower Pan

Caulk is applied at the seams of shower pans and other areas that are exposed to water to prevent seepage. If water is allowed to get between the joints, it can go under the shower pan down to the exposed subflooring. This can cause rot and larger damage to your bathroom and underlying living spaces. Caulk is easy to apply and takes little effort or time. Reapplying caulk to your shower pan can prevent costly repairs in the future.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any old caulking from the top edge of the shower pan. Slide a screwdriver or razor blade under the edge between the shower and the caulk. Gently cut away a starting place to pull the caulk up. Grab the lifted caulk with needle-nose pliers and pull the caulk up. Apply heat from a hair dryer if the caulk is too hard to remove. Hold the hair dryer 6 to 8 inches from the caulk until you can lift it gently with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Scrape away any remaining caulk with a putty knife or razor blade.

    • 3

Wash the area with warm soapy water. Wipe any caulk residue with a soapy sponge and allow it to dry for an hour.

    • 4

Clean the area with a small amount of rubbing alcohol with a dry towel. The shower pan should be completely clean and free of residue before you apply any new caulk.

    • 5

Cut the end of the caulk tube at a 45-degree angle, and insert a very thin, long nail into the top of the tube to break the seal.

    • 6

Hold the caulking tube directly onto the seam, and run a small line of caulk in 1-foot sections.

    • 7

Dip your finger into a small tub of water, and run your finger along the top of the caulk to press it into the seams and to create a smooth edge.

    • 8

Continue running the caulk until the edge of the pan has been caulked. Allow the caulk to dry for at least 24 hours before you use your shower.
