How to Get a Bubble Out of Sheetrock

Drywall bubbles destroy the overall finish and look of your wall. Bubbles on your drywall are actually caused by the drywall tape. Often these bubbles are the result of not applying the tape properly to the joints, or applying it against lose or broken pieces of sheet rock. Drywall tape must be applied to moist joint compound. If the joint compound is too dry, or there is not enough compound for it to adhere to it will pucker up.

Instructions

  1. Repair

    • 1

Cut a slit down the center of the drywall bubble with a razor blade.

    • 2

Dip a Q-tip in water and force the wet Q-tip behind the slit drywall tape to wet it. Remove the Q-tip.

    • 3

Smooth the drywall tape back against the joint compound to get rid of the bubble.

    Replace

    • 4

Insert the tip of the razor blade behind the bubbled piece of drywall tape, and slice it away from the sheetrock joints. Discard the old piece.

    • 5

Mix enough drywall joint compound to resmooth over the area. Follow the compound mixing instructions. Many joint compounds require 1 1/2 gallons of water per one bag of joint compound.

    • 6

Apply a generous amount of joint compound with a 6-inch knife to the seam that is now exposed from the piece of drywall tape removed.

    • 7

Flatten a new piece of drywall tape over the compound. Wipe down the length of the tape with your hand, using moderate pressure.
