Instructions

    • 1

Inspect your stair treads and identify the ones that creak when you walk on them. Look for loose bullnose along the edge of the treads.

    • 2

Hammer 8d finish nails through the center of the front edge of the bullnose every 6 to 8 inches along the entire length of the stair tread. This will secure the bullnose in place and prevent it from creaking as you step onto the tread.

    • 3

Center a nail set over the head of each finish nail. Tap the end of the nail set with a hammer. Set each nail 1/16 inch below the surface of the bullnose.

    • 4

Fill each nail hole in the repaired bullnose with wood putty using the blade of a putty knife to leave it slightly raised over the surface of the wood. Allow the putty to dry 24 hours.

    • 5

Sand the putty flush with the surface of the bullnose using a fine-grit sanding block. Move the block in the same direction as the wood grain to avoid scratching the wood. Clean off the dust from sanding with a tack cloth.

    • 6

Touch up the repaired bullnose with matching wood finish using a small paintbrush. Allow the first coat to dry 4 hours and apply a second coat.
