How to Install Extra Soundproofing After Drywall

Sometimes, even after you install drywall in a room, additional soundproofing is required. For example, if you plan to build a home studio for audio recording, you may want to minimize sound bouncing off the walls. In other situations, you may need to install soundproofing to block out noise from neighbors. Fortunately, you can install soundproof acoustic tiles after you install drywall. The process is straightforward and will take only a short while to complete.

Acoustic sound panels
Construction adhesive
Tape measure
Utility knife or scissors

Instructions

  Apply construction adhesive to the back of a soundproof acoustic panel. Place a bread of adhesive around the back perimeter edge and place a large X across the back of the tie, starting and ending in each corner. This is the process you use when applying adhesive to each panel.

  Place the panel in an upper corner of the wall. Hold it in place for approximately 30 seconds while the adhesive sets.

  Apply adhesive to the next panel and place the second against the first. Butt the panels close together to eliminate any gaps that will allow sound penetration. Repeat this process for all the panels in the first row except for the last one in the first row.

  Measure the distance between the last installed panel and the corner with a tape measure. Transfer the measurements to an acoustic panel and cut the the panel to size with a utility knife or a pair of sharp scissors. Apply adhesive to the back of the panel and press it onto the wall to complete the first row.

  Apply the second row and each additional row as you installed the first row. When you get to the bottom row, you may have to cut each panel to size so it will fit between the second-to-last row and the floor.
