How to Do In-Wall Cable Concealment

The advent of flat-screen TVs has changed the way some homeowners install electrical outlets and run audio/video TV cables. Unlike TVs with CRT displays, flat-screen TVs are almost always mounted flush with the wall. Concealing TV cables in a wall involves creating a wall opening directly behind the flat-screen TV and using recessed cable plates that have a large opening to allow the cables to slip through the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a spot directly behind the flat-screen TV where you want the cables to go into the wall. Using a stud finder, locate the studs behind the wall that run along the chosen spot; knowing the location of the studs will allow you to avoid them when cutting through the wall.

    • 2

Hold the mounting bracket supplied with the recessed cable plate on the spot against the wall and align the bracket horizontally and vertically, but remember to avoid any of the studs that you detected earlier. Draw an outline of the bracket's inner opening with a pencil, and then drill a hole inside each inner corner of the outline using a power drill fitted with a spade bit. Slip the tip of a drywall saw into each hole and cut along the outline to create an opening for the bracket.

    • 3

Place the mounting bracket in the wall opening, push the lower tab downwards, and push the upper tab upwards to fasten the bracket onto the wall. Attach any retaining screws with a screwdriver and screw the cover plate onto the bracket.

    • 4

Hold another bracket against the wall directly below the first bracket, but place the bracket above the floor at the same height as the height of the electrical outlets inside your home. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to install the second recessed cable plate on the spot you measured.

    • 5

Slip the TV cable into upper cable plate and drop it down to the lower cable plate. Slowly lower the cable until the tip of the cable slides into the mouth of the lower plate and pull the end of the cable out of the wall. Mount the flat-screen TV onto the wall and connect the audio/video cable to the TV.
