How to Get Dings Out of Drywall

Drywall, which is also called gypsum board in some construction circles, is a commonly used material for interior walls. The surface holds latex and oil-based paints, or it can be covered in wallpaper. Unlike holes knocked into the wall surface, minor dents and dings are relatively simple to fix using drywall patching compound, which can be purchased at hardware stores. Once the repair has dried, you can repaint the wall surface or apply new wallpaper.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply the drywall patching compound to the dings in the wall with the flat edge of a putty knife. The patching compound is premixed and needs no preparation; however, you must apply the compound relatively quickly because it starts to dry with air contact. Let the material harden overnight.

Smooth the repair with fine-grit sandpaper, then wipe with a damp paper towel to remove sanding dust.

    • 3

Spread a drop cloth on the floor below the repair area.

Refinish the wall surface with a paint color of your choosing. Use a paint roller for best results. You'll need to repaint the entire wall for a smooth finish that blends with the drywall repair.
