How to Deter Squirrels in the Attic With a High Pitch

While squirrels may be a cute addition to your lawn, if they get into your home, you're looking at trouble. Squirrels in your attic can chew through pipes and wires, deposit droppings and urine and, if they die in the attic, leave a pungent olfactory reminder of their presence. Prevention is one of the best cures for squirrel infestations, and one popular method is placement of high-frequency, ultrasonic transmitters in the attic. These high pitches can be disturbing to animals, but can't be detected by human hearing.

Examine your attic for possible locations that squirrels can enter. Vents and wooden gables are particularly vulnerable. As a further deterrent, you should attempt to seal these areas to limit pest access.

    • 2

Measure the square footage of the attic, using a tape measure. Measure the width and depth of the floor in feet and multiply the numbers together. Most ultrasonic pest repellents will cover a limited amount of floor space.

Place the devices near potential access points, using enough devices to adequately cover the area based on the square footage. Place the devices in a location where the sound waves are free to travel and are unblocked by boxes or other obstructions.
