The Height of a Staircase Handrail

A staircase handrail is one of those items that you may take for granted. You put your hand out, and there it is to give you stability and an extra measure of safety when ascending or descending stairs. You never give a second thought to the optimum height that a handrail should be. When you need to install a handrail, this may be another story. Know the correct height to install your handrail so people can take it for granted.
  1. Handrail Requirements

    • Many localities may require that a handrail be installed on all staircases that have four or more risers. Staircases that are enclosed on each side and are less than 44 inches wide need only have a handrail on one side. An open stairway of the same dimensions may need a handrail on each side. Staircases between 44 and 88 inches wide may need a handrail on each side while even wider staircases may require a handrail in the center of the stairs also. Check the stair codes for your locality for exact requirements.

    Handrail Measurements

    • According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the height of the handrail should not exceed 34 inches and not be less than 30 inches. This measurement is taken from the forward most edge of one of the stair treads to the top of the handrail and also applies to the nosing at the forward most edge of stair landings. The width of the handrail itself should be no less than 1 1/4 inches and no wider than 2 inches.

    Measuring Handrail Height

    • To get the most accurate handrail height measurement, the use of a 4-foot level may be the best tool for the job. The level should be placed upright at the very end of one of the stair treads. The top of the level can then be moved in the direction needed until the bubble that indicates plumb is within the two marks. The measurement that is taken from the bottom of the level to the top of the handrail where it meets the edge of the level will give you the exact rail height.

    Handrail Installation

    • The handrail should be installed using brackets that keep it 3 inches from the wall. The brackets should be screwed into the wall where the stud framing is located for strength. Use a stud finder to find studs without poking exploratory holes in your wall. For most staircases with an 8 foot or longer handrail, three brackets are required.
