How to Install a 4 X 10 Duct

Most homes have 4-inch by 10-inch registers for their heating and air conditioning system. This is a typical size vent, and calls for 6-inch round ducting. The most practical way to make installing ductwork a do-it-yourself job is to use flexible ducts, which do not require the tools or expertise of traditional metal ducts. It is always best, however, to consult with a professional before beginning your project to assure you have selected the correct size ducts for your HVAC system.

  • Hand saw
  • Flexible duct
  • 2 metal ties

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 4 1/4-inch by 10 1/4-inch hole in the floor or ceiling where you want your vent to go.

    • 2

Open the duct, and expand several feet. Slide the ducting 12 to 18 inches over the collar on the main duct trunk. Secure with a metal tie and duct tape. Three to five layers should suffice.

    • 3

Pull the duct until it is expanded to the register. Cut it to length using a utility knife and metal snips or a round duct cutter.

    • 4

Slide the rectangular end of the register box into the hole cut for it. Slip the duct 12 inches over the round end of the register box. Secure with a metal tie, and wrap with duck tape to seal.

    • 5

Install the register. Working from inside the room, place one end of the vent into place and press the other end with the palm of your hand. It should slip into position. Secure vents in the ceiling or walls with screws.
