How to Hide a Scrape in Formica

Formica is a brand-name plastic surface used as a countertop in kitchens and bathrooms. The material is somewhat soft, however, and tends to scratch easily. When replacing the countertop is not possible, there are several options for repairing the Formica, although different materials are required for large and small scratches.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Clear your countertop of any appliances or other items. Wet one dish rag with warm water, then dab on a small amount of dish soap. Wipe the counters completely clean, rinse the rag and wipe the counters once more.

    • 2

Apply a small amount of paste wax directly to the first scratch. Fill the scratch entirely, then buff the area with the second cloth. Paste wax should only be used on shallow scratches; repeat this filling and buffing process for the rest of the shallow scratches.

    • 3

Apply Formica filler to deeper scratches. Allow the filler to dry, then buff it gently with the steel wool. Do not apply strong pressure, or the wool will create new shallow scratches.

Clean the countertop once more with warm water and dish soap. Allow the counter to dry, then apply a spray wax polish. Rub the polish off the counter, then replace your appliances and other countertop objects.
