How to Fix the Damage on Walls From Curtain Rods

Curtain rods are held to the wall with mounting brackets. The brackets are secured to the drywall or plaster with screws. If you put the screws into drywall without screwing them into a stud, the weight of the rod and curtain may pull it out of the wall. This will leave holes in the wall that you will need to patch. Drywall joint compound will fix holes in drywall walls, and patching plaster will fix holes in plaster walls.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any loose piece of drywall or plaster in the hole. Vacuum out the hole with a shop vac to remove dust.

    • 2

Pour a package of joint compound in a bucket, if you have drywall holes. For holes in plaster walls, use patching plaster instead of the drywall compound.

    • 3

Fit a drill with a mixing bit. Add water to the joint compound or patching plaster according to the package directions, and mix it in with the mixing bit.

    • 4

Wipe down the damaged area with a damp sponge to moisten it, if you are working with plaster. Fill the hole with the joint compound or patching plaster using a drywall trowel. If the hole is more than 1/2 inch deep, fill it halfway, let it dry, then fill it the rest of the way.

    • 5

Wet the edge of the trowel. Smooth the patch with the trowel so it is even with the rest of the wall surface. Let the compound or patching plaster dry for 24 hours.
