How to Adjust Drawers

Drawers are efficient storage systems home and office. You can find drawers in nearly every room of the house, including the kitchen, the bedroom, the bathroom and the storage room. They are often used in desks and storage areas of offices as well. When the drawers don't fit correctly or become misaligned, they become far less efficient. They are hard to open or close and may stick in certain sections of the track. However, there are several ways to fix them. Before you begin, pull the drawer out completely. Replace the drawer and check to see if it runs smoothly after each step.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the screws holding the guides in place on each side. If any are loose, tighten them with the screwdriver.

    • 2

Remove the front screw of the guide. Use a level and mark where the front of the guide should be. Use a drill to screw the guide into the pencil mark.

    • 3

Remove one of the drawer guides if the drawer is too tight. Use a grater plane to shave off 1/8- to 1/4 inch-of the inside of the drawer, depending on how tight the drawer was.

    • 4

Remove both drawer guides if the drawer is too narrow. Place a piece of cardboard over the screw holes for the guides. Screw the guides back in over the cardboard to reduce the distance between the drawers and the guides.
