How to Repair a Tile Masonry Shower

Masonry tile in your shower is there to protect the shower wall from moisture, and also to serve as a decorative element. The tiles are connected to one another by grout, a form of cement. If the tiles become damaged or loose, or if the grout starts coming out, that moisture barrier can be compromised, and you can have all kinds of problems with your shower walls. Tile that is damaged should be taken out and replaced.

  • Grout saw

Instructions

    • 1

Dig out the grout from around the first damaged tile using your grout saw. Break up the grout by scraping the carbide blade up and back, pulverizing the grout. Get as much of the grout out from around the tile as you can.

    • 2

Place the tip of the chisel into the space along one side of the tile where the grout has been removed. Tilt the chisel back at a slight angle to set the tip right at the joint where the tile meets the wall.

    • 3

Tap at the chisel with your hammer to loosen the joint. Move the chisel over by an inch or two along the tile and hit it again. Repeat, working all around the border of the tile until it loosens and pops out.

    • 4

Repeat the whole process for each tile that has to come out. Scrape off any remaining mortar from the wall with your razor scraper.

    • 5

Spread tile mortar over the back of the first new tile, making it about 1/8 of an inch deep and coating the whole back.

    • 6

Set the new tile into place in one of the spaces where the old tiles came out. Set the new tile so it’s evenly spaced on all sides.

    • 7

Repeat for each new tile. Let the mortar set for 12 hours.

    • 8

Grout the tiles with a grout float, pressing the grout into each space and scraping it off the tile face with the long edge of the float. Wipe off the residual grout with a damp sponge. Let it set for 24 hours.
