How to Fix a Hole in a Door Made by a Broom Handle

Poking a hole in a door with a broom handle might make a sickening crunch, but the damage can be repaired. Use a wood-putty compound available at hardware and home improvement stores to patch the hole. While you're at the store, buy a can of stain or paint to match the door finish. This repair typically takes 24 hours, including drying time for the putty and paint.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Apply wood putty into the hole in the door with the putty knife, smoothing the surface with the edge of the knife blade. The putty begins to dry on contact with air, so work quickly to fill in the hole. Wipe away excess putty with an old cloth.

    • 2

Seal the cap tightly on the can of putty to prevent hardening the leftover product. Leave the repair to dry for the time recommended on your can of wood putty.

    • 3

Sand the repair with sandpaper until smooth with the door surface. Use progressively finer grades of sandpaper as you work.

    • 4

Open the can of stain or paint to apply a coat over the repaired door with the paint brush. Apply stain in the same direction as the wood grain for the rest of the door.
