How to Change Recessed Light Bulbs With a Glass Cover

Recessed lighting fixtures fit flush with the ceiling to create a sleek, stylish look in the home. Some fixtures may be equipped with a glass cover over the bulb. This cover may be used to focus light from the bulb or may be tinted like a filter to create different lighting effects. The cover typically either unscrews from the main fixture containing the bulb or pulls downward on a hinge mechanism so you can replace the bulb. For safety's sake, have a friend spot you and hold the ladder steady when changing a burned-out bulb in a recessed fixture.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the light switch to cut the power while you work.

    • 2

Position the stepladder below the light fixture. Recruit a friend to hold the ladder while you work.

    • 3

Twist a screw-on glass cover counterclockwise to remove it and pass it down to your helper. If your fixture has a hinged cover, pull gently on the side opposite the hinges. The cover swings downward.

    • 4

Unscrew an incandescent bulb from the socket and pass it down to your helper. Halogen and fluorescent bulbs may pull straight out of the socket.

    • 5

Insert a new bulb appropriate to your particular light fixture.

    • 6

Screw on the glass cover or raise the hinge mechanism, depending on your type of fixture.
