How to Fix Grungy Grout

The grout between your tiles is more absorbent than the tiles themselves, which means it can stain more easily than the tiles. If your grout is dirty and grungy but is not cracked and damaged, then the trick is to get the grout clean. Simply scrubbing it with cleanser won't work, because those stains can be deep set. Oxygen bleach is a form of cleanser that uses oxygen bubbles to lift stains out of porous materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the grout lines with household cleanser. Proceed with the rest of the project while the lines are still wet.

    • 2

Mix half a cup of oxygen bleach in a ceramic bowl, adding hot water and stirring with a wooden spoon. Continue adding the water and stirring until it reaches a thick, pasty consistency.

    • 3

Use the rubber spatula to spread the paste of oxygen bleach onto the grout lines. Make a thick layer of it. Cover all the lines

    • 4

Allow the oxygen bleach to fizz and bubble on the grout for about 30 minutes. Add more paste if the paste on the lines starts to dry out during that time.

    • 5

Use an old toothbrush to scrub the oxygen bleach paste. Rinse well. Assess the lines. If the stains aren’t completely lifted, repeat the whole process.
