How to Replace a Bi-Fold Closet Pivot Bracket

Bi-fold closet doors allow full access to the interior of a closet by exposing the entire opening. After a period of use, the hardware may become used and defective. One piece that often needs to be replaced is the pivot bracket. This bracket is installed in the upper rail and holds the pivot which allows the door to move in a horizontal direction. Replacement parts are readily available and easily changed.

Instructions

  1. Installing the Bracket

    • 1

Purchase the replacement part. You can buy just the pivot bracket or an entire replacement kit if other parts on the door are worn.

    • 2

Lower the door by locating the lower pivot pin in the floor bracket. Lift the door slightly to relieve the weight and turn the pin counterclockwise. For lower pivot pins with a vertical adjustment screw, use a wrench to turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise until the door lowers.

    • 3

Push down on the spring loaded top pivot pin and release the pin from the upper pivot bracket or push up on the bottom of the door until there is enough clearance to free it from the lower bracket, depending on the type of top pivot pin that is installed. When the upper pin is clear, the door should lift out of the lower bracket. Set the door aside.

    • 4

Remove the old bracket. Loosen the screw that holds the pivot bracket to the expansion bracket on the upper railing. Set the screw aside.

    • 5

Remove the expansion bracket if it needs to be replaced by tilting it to one side until one edge clears the railing. Optionally, the railing can be removed by unscrewing it from the door frame. The entire bracket will then slide out the end.

    • 6

Screw the replacement pivot bracket to the expansion bracket with the included screws. The hole for the pivot pin should be closest to the door jamb.

    Reinstalling the Door

    • 7

Insert the outer edge guide, located on the top edge of the door opposite the hinges, into the railing. Insert the pivot pin on the top of the door into the hole in the newly installed pivot bracket. Lifting the door, place the lower pin into the lower floor bracket.

    • 8

Move the top pivot bracket toward the track end until it is 1/4 inch from the jamb. Check the position of the door and its operation, moving the bracket and bottom pin until the door is properly aligned and can open and close without hitting the door jamb. Tighten the top bracket screw to lock it into place.

When adjusted, multiple doors should align snugly but not too tightly and with no overlap .

Adjust the lower pin or adjustment screw, turning it to the right to raise the door or to the left to lower it until you get a snug vertical fit.
