How to Reseal Grout in Shower Tiles

Grout is a form of cement that sits between your shower tiles. It is more porous than the tile itself, which means it has to be sealed against moisture and stains. It should be sealed a week after installation, and then about once a year after that. It's important that it be completely clean and free of any stains when you reseal it, or those stains will be sealed in. It's also important that it be completely dry, so you will be without use of your shower for a few days.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the grout lines thoroughly with an acid-based cleanser (such as those that have citrus or vinegar in them). Use a scrub brush to get the lines completely free of any stains. Rescrub as needed.

    • 2

Let the grout dry for at least 48 hours.

    • 3

Apply the grout sealant to the grout lines with your applicator bottle, coating each line completely. Use paper towels to wipe off any sealant that gets on the tiles.

    • 4

Watch the sealant for 10 minutes. Re-apply sealant to any areas that start to dry out during that time.

    • 5

Wipe dry paper towels along the lines after 10 minutes to take up the excess sealant from the caulk lines. Let the sealant set for 24 hours before using the shower.
