Repairing Molly Holes in Drywall

Many different styles of fasteners are designed to secure everything from pictures to shelving in drywall. One of the strongest and most popular fasteners is known as a “molly.” When a molly fastener is removed from drywall, you need to repair the hole left in the drywall. Ready-mixed spackle is a product manufactured for patching holes in drywall and is easily applied. You can perform the necessary repair with the proper tools, materials and basic home improvement ability.

Things You'll Need

  • Cloth
  • 1 1/2-inch putty knife
  • Spackle
  • 3-inch putty knife
  • Medium-grade sandpaper

Instructions

      Remove any residual gypsum particles from the surface of the drywall surrounding the hole using a lightly moistened cloth.

      Fill the hole with spackle using the 1 1/2-inch putty knife. Make sure to use enough spackle to fill the hole completely. Feather the excess around the hole with the 3-inch putty knife.

      Allow the spackle to dry for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer.

      Sand, if needed, using medium-grade sandpaper. Once smoothed, the repaired drywall is ready for paint or wallpaper.
