How to Fix Nicks on Tile Scratches Without Removing Tile

Ceramic tile covers walls, floors, countertops and bathtub surrounds in buildings of all ages, according to the National Park Service. Although ceramic tile is very versatile and quite resilient, heavy objects often cause nicks or scratches in the tile surface. Often, matching older tile is impossible. Repairing the nicks and scratches is a do-it-yourself project made possible with the help of a few items found at your local hardware store.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the nicked or chipped tile and the scratched area with soap and water. Rinse the tile with water until no soap remains.

    • 2

Dry the tile using a hairdryer. Aim the hairdryer towards the nicked or scratched tile for at least 15 minutes.

    • 3

Dab a small amount of oil-based primer on the nicked area. Wipe the area with the paint brush and allow the exposed section to soak up the primer for at least two hours.

    • 4

Apply the finish paint that matches the tile color. Use the paint brush and lightly dab the paint on the nick until it is covered. Allow it to dry for 24 hours. If it is not dark enough, add another coat of paint and wait 24 hours.

Mix the two-part marine epoxy as directed by the manufacture. Apply the epoxy to the nick. Use a toothpick to apply enough epoxy to make the area where the nick is level with the surrounding tile. Allow it to dry for 24 hours.
