How to Fix a Hole in Drywall From a Door Knob

Holes in drywall, such as those caused by a doorknob swinging forcibly into the wall, will virtually disappear with an application of patching compound and touch-up paint. Buy drywall patch at a hardware or home improvement store along with a small can of paint to match the color of the wall with the hole. This home repair project typically takes 24 hours, which includes the drying time for the patching material.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the container of premixed patching compound then use a putty knife to fill the hole with the material. The compound starts to dry when exposed to air so work swiftly and close the container when you're finished.

    • 2

Smooth the wall surface with the putty knife and wipe away any excess patching compound. Let the repair dry overnight.

    • 3

Sand the repair surface until smooth, using progressively finer grades of sandpaper. Start with relatively coarse, 120-grit sandpaper and finish with 150- to 180-grit paper. The higher the grit number, the finer the sandpaper.

    • 4

Spread a drop cloth on the floor below the repair area.

    • 5

Paint the patched hole in a color that matches the surrounding wall.
