How to Hide Picture Hook Holes Without Painting a Room

After taking pictures off the wall and removing the hardware, there is bound to be visible holes. Unless you plan to cover the area with another picture or hide the wall with tall furniture, use spackling paste to fill and conceal the hole. There is no reason to paint the entire room just to hide the holes. You may decide to add a dab of paint after the spackling paste dries, especially if it isn’t a white wall.

Instructions

  Run the edge of the putty knife over the edges of the hole to smooth the area. This may not be necessary if there aren’t any protruding edges around the hole.

  Dip the tip of the putty knife in the can of spackling paste and remove a dab of spackling paste, enough to overfill the hole slightly. Use spackling paste that is ready to use, right out of the can.

  Press the spackling paste in the hole and move the putty knife around the edge of the hole to press the putty into the indentation.

  Run the side of the putty knife flat against the wall and over the hole, back and forth. The object is to fill the hole completely, and make the area flush with the wall. Wipe off excess spackling paste.

  Allow the spackling paste to thoroughly dry. Refer to the instructions on the package for recommended drying times. It will take about eight hours.

  Sand the area first with medium sandpaper, and then with fine sandpaper, to make the filled hole blend in with the surrounding wall.

  Dab a bit of paint on the hole to conceal, if desired. Use the same color as the wall. If the spackling paste blends into the wall, you can skip this step.
