Resealing Travertine Tile

Travertine tiles come in a variety of sizes and styles. Rivers and streams found underground form travertine, making each tile different from the others. Well-polished finishes and sealants help give travertine tile a polished look. However, the sealant may become worn after several years. When this occurs, removing the old sealant and resealing the travertine tiles helps restore the beauty and prevent damage to the tile.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old sealant remaining on the tile by scrubbing it with a soft bristled brush and acetone. Wipe it with a clean towel or cloth. Repeat the process until no sealant remains on the tile.

    • 2

Sweep and mop the travertine tile. Use a damp sponge mop and clean the tile until the water rinses clear. Do not oversaturate the travertine tile, since it is porous and may trap water.

    • 3

Dry the travertine tile. Use a hair dryer set on high heat for 15 minutes for a small area. For larger areas, allow the tile to dry for at least two hours.

    • 4

Purchase travertine sealant from a hardware or homebuilder store. It comes in light or dark, based on the color of your tile.

    • 5

Mix and apply sealant specifically designated for travertine tile. Follow the manufacturer’s directions. For instance, the application often requires a large sponge.

    • 6

Cover the area with the sealant. It may take several coats of sealant, so allow the area to dry between each coat.
