How to Fix a Scratch in a Kitchen Sink

Kitchen sinks are usually very durable fixtures that can last several years without developing cracks or scratches. Heavy impact accidents, however, such as dropping a large dish or pot into the sink, can cause scratches or even cracks in a porcelain or ceramic sink. Stainless steel sinks can also develop scratches through dropping cutlery or other items when doing the dishes. Fortunately, kitchen sink scratches can generally be repaired without professional assistance.

  • Sponge
  • Epoxy adhesive
  • Stir stick

Instructions

  1. Ceramic or Porcelain Sinks

    • 1

Wash the sink thoroughly with baking soda or hot water mixed with a few drops of dish soap and a sponge. Scrub the sink vigorously to ensure all dirt, debris and cleaning residue are removed. Dry it thoroughly with a rag once the sink is clean. A clean sink will increase the likelihood of the epoxy bonding to the sink and fixing the scratch.

    • 2

Prepare the epoxy adhesive. Check the packet instructions for specific instructions. Epoxy adhesives usually come in two parts, the hardener and the epoxy resin. A typical ratio is two parts epoxy resin and one part hardener. Combine the elements in the proportions indicated on the packet and place it in a plastic container. Mix the adhesive for about two minutes with a stir stick.

    • 3

Gather a line of epoxy adhesive along the length of a putty knife once it's prepared. Smear the adhesive along the length of the damaged area, ensuring you push the adhesive right into the scratch or crack.

    • 4

Set the putty knife on a table when working on smaller scratches. Pick up pieces of the epoxy adhesive with a toothpick. Push the tip of the toothpick into the scratch to fill it with epoxy.

    • 5

Wait for the epoxy adhesive to dry. Curing times vary depending on the brand of adhesive, but it should be dry after 24 hours.

    • 6

Paint the sink with a matching appliance paint once the adhesive has dried. This will even out the appearance of the sink so the area where you repaired the scratch is not as visible.

    Stainless Steel Sinks

    • 7

Scrub the surface of the sink with an ultra fine-grade abrasive pad. Scrub in the same direction as the natural brushed finish of the sink.

    • 8

Apply a non-abrasive stainless sink cleaner to the pad then wipe around the sink. Continue to scrub in the direction of the sink's brushed grain.

    • 9

Leave the steel cleaner to sit on the sink's surface for five minutes then wash the sink thoroughly with dish soap and warm water and dry it thoroughly with a rag.
