How to Fix the Weatherstripping Under the Front Door

If the weatherstripping on the bottom of your door is old and worn out, it could be costing you money every single day. The purpose of weatherstripping is to keep the cold air on the outside of your home from making its way indoors. If that weatherstripping is not up to the job, your home will be less energy-efficient, and that can send your heating bills through the roof. Taking the time to replace that worn-out weatherstripping is well worth the investment of time and money.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask a helper hold the door while you use a screwdriver and a hammer to drive out the hinge pins. Carefully lift the door off the hinges and place it on a stable surface, such as a pair of saw horses or a solid table.

    • 2

Measure the length and width of the bottom of the door. Purchase a new weatherstrip in that size.

    • 3

Peel the old weatherstripping off the bottom of the door and discard it. You can purchase a new weatherstrip for about $10, so it is easier to replace it than to try to repair one that's worn out.

    • 4

Line up the barbed ribs and grooves on the bottom of the new weatherstripping with the slots on the bottom of the door. Hit the weatherstripping with a rubber mallet to seal it to the door.

    • 5

Place the door back on the hinges.
