Removing Laminate Back-Splash Glue

With careful use, a kitchen or bathroom laminate counter top can remain beautiful and useful for 20 years or longer. Laminate counters and back splashes combine wood or particleboard with a long-lasting top finish that adds decorative appeal. Although relatively inexpensive, laminates these days can mimic more costly materials such as stone. If glue residue is marring the beauty of your laminate back splash, remove it without damaging the finish.

Things You'll Need

• Flammable grade lacquer thinner
• Cleaning rags
• Protective gloves (optional)
• Safety goggles
• Glass jar or heavy plastic container (not disposable)

     Open the windows to provide fresh air to the work area.

     Put on protective goggles. For those with sensitive skin, wearing gloves is a good idea.

     Cover wood flooring or other nearby wood surfaces with newspapers to prevent damage.

     Pour lacquer thinner into a glass container or heavy plastic container.

   • 5

     Put a moderate quantity of lacquer thinner on a rag and rub the soiled back splash to remove the glue.

     Repeat as necessary with clean rags until all the glue is gone. This step may require repeating several times.
